Education
In The Education of Jair Clarke, Jair Benzion Clarke tells the story of growing up in a school with a predominantly black student body. Clarke describes a series of experiences she had at school that are uncomfortable and upsetting. Her name was often mixed up, and the school staff would pet her like a dog. During gym class, she felt different from other students, and her teachers and classmates treated her differently.
In 1992, Clarke was elected to City Council. When he was a councilman, he pushed for a progressive agenda. His principles of equality and fairness have guided his political career. His policies have helped provide affordable housing, increase education funding, improve public safety, and spur job creation. These achievements have helped cement Clarke’s reputation as a politically active and influential member of the community. His election to District 5 came when a vacant seat on the council opened up.
Some traditional Labour members are concerned that Clarke’s education policies will include more academies. Academies are state schools which are partly funded by private sponsors. Traditional Labour party members object to private individuals buying into the public education system. Despite the opposition, some commentators believe Clarke will address the problem of pupil behaviour. In addition, Tony Blair suggested yesterday that Clarke would announce new powers for headteachers. These powers were hinted in the government’s five-year plan for education.
